Violent crime soars by 18 per cent as warnings raised on falling police numbers in 2017. THE nation is in the grip of a surge in violent crime, figures have revealed. Shocking statistics show that offenses of violence have soared by 18 per cent in just 12 months. They come as a separate report showed the number of police officers has fallen to its lowest level since 1985. Steve White, chairman of the Police Federation which represents rank and file officers, said: “What more of a wake-up call does the government need? “Officer numbers are dropping consistently every year yet our members are having to deal with not only more  crimes but the most unimaginable atrocities such as those in Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge. World Pasta Day

I was not surprised to see that there was such a thing as a World Pasta Day; after all, there’s a national/international/world day of the year for everything else. I was a bit surprised to learn that this celebration commemorates the World Pasta Congress that was held in Rome on October 25, 1995. (I was unaware that pasta needed a world congress.) Meanwhile, on this date in 2005, the International Pasta Organization (IPO) was formed. (I was unaware that pasta needed an international organization.) The IPO is apparently related, in some way that I shan’t bother to explore, to the UN.A.F.P.A.—the Union of Organizations of Manufacturers of Pasta Products of the E.U.; the initials refer to the organization’s French name. (I was unaware…oh, forget about it.) Anyway, the goal of this little holiday, like the goal of the world’s pasta manufacturers, is to get us all to eat—well, really, to buy—more pasta. Suddenly I feel an inexplicable urge to eat homemade pasta today, just on principle, because pasta is delicious but who wants to be in thrall to Big Noodle?
