Dogs can get a Lyme disease vaccine, why can't you?

Image
There are no good reasons, and a lot of bad ones, that your dog can be vaccinated for Lyme disease but you can not. Profiteering and vaccination fears have teamed up to leave humans defenseless from a terrible malady. WBUR shares the story: For Dr. Stanley Plotkin, a prominent vaccine scientist, Lyme disease is personal. His son, Alec, collapsed from a slow heart rate when he was 39, brought down by a rare heart complication from Lyme. His son survived, but the incident helped cement Plotkin's resolve to pursue a human vaccine against Lyme disease. Using his bully pulpit as an emeritus professor of infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania, he’s taken his case from The New York Times to the New England Journal of Medicine, in which he called the lack of Lyme protection "the worst recent failure to use an effective vaccine." That’s because we used to have a vaccine for Lyme, called LYMErix, but it was pulled from the market. Now, the only family member w...

Tillerson may quit soon, frustrated with Trump

Image
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former CEO Exxon-Mobil, is thinking about quitting his job because he is fed up with Trump, according to CNN . Tillerson has a growing list of differences with the White House, including a new debate over Iran policy and personnel. His frustration is hardly a secret and it has spilled out publicly at times. But friends sense a change of late. For weeks, conversations with Tillerson friends outside of Washington have left the impression that he, despite his frustrations, was determined to stay on the job at least through the end of the year. That would allow time to continue efforts to reorganize the State Department and would mean he could claim to have put in a year as America's top diplomat. But two sources who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity over the weekend said they would not be surprised if there was a "Rexit" from Foggy Bottom sooner that that. Experience the Voyager Golden Record at San Francisco's Exploratorium, August 3

Image
On August 3 in celebration of the 40th anniversary month of the Voyager interstellar mission, please join me at San Francisco's Exploratorium to experience the Voyager Golden Record with two of the brilliant minds behind it -- SETI pioneer Frank Drake and science writer Timothy Ferris. In August and September 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft, Voyager 1 and 2, on a grand tour of the solar system and beyond, into the mysteries of interstellar space. Mounted to each spacecraft is a golden phonograph record, a message to introduce our civilization to extraterrestrials, perhaps billions of years from now. Ozma Records , the label I co-founded with my friend Timothy Daly, is releasing the Voyager Golden Record as a box set of vinyl LPs so those on Earth can hear it as it was meant to be played. As our co-producer/designer Lawrence Azerrad has said, "It is the ultimate album package of the ultimate album package." (The limited edition super-deluxe Kickstarter edition will n...

Watch a rope of molten steel barely miss a worker

Image
In steelworker parlance, a cobble is a bit of steel that catches on a roller during manufacturing. Cobbles cause the molten steel coming out of the furnace to back up and snake wildly around. Meet Anatomic Anna and Andy, dolls with removable organs

Image
It's a shame that these didn't exist when my daughter was a little girl. I think she would have loved playing with them. Why? Because these unusual dolls have removable organs . Designed for 4 to 12 year olds, Anatomic Anna and Andy are the brainchildren of a London-based homeschooling mother who wanted to further her kids' STEM education but could only find anatomical models made for medical students. So, she made her own. Through her company, Little Boffins - Learn Through Play, she's kickstarting the two dolls . One doll, either male or female, costs £50 (about $64). By the way, I couldn't help but notice that they resemble American Girl dolls. So, I checked their height. Like AG dolls, Anna and Andy also stand 18" tall. Given that, I'm guessing AG doll clothes will fit this gut-spilling duo too. Thanks, Joyce! Iconic (and super creepy) Clown Motel is up for sale

Image
Between Las Vegas and Reno, there is a sleeping establishment like no other. It's simply called The Clown Motel and it's been deemed " America's scariest motel ." In 2014, Cory described it as follows : Hundreds of clowns stare from every corner, the walls are hung with clown-portraits, and there is a "historic miners' cemetery" out the motel's back door, wherein rest the mouldering corpses of the victims of a mysterious epidemic that is only known as "Tonopah plague." Now it can be yours for $900,000. According to LasVegasNow.com , the motel's current owner (of 22 years) Bob Perchetti is selling it so he can retire, "I'm going to go fishing. I want to go enjoy myself. I'm going to do a little camping with the grandkids." One condition of the sale: "the new owners can upgrade it but don't lose what the people love." Wait, does that mean the clowns or the corpses? Either way, no thank you . fro...

Watch this 'impossible' ring and ball puzzle get solved

Image
This video is an oldie but a goodie. Here's the setup: An elderly Japanese gentleman named Akihara Toshiko has been trying to solve a ring puzzle he found in his doctor's office. He gives up and writes the TV "detective agency" show Knight Scoop to ask for help. The TV show agrees to help the 73-year old man solve his puzzle. And, that's where the fun begins. They pull in a physics professor, a chimpanzee, a magician, and, finally, a real expert who knows exactly how to solve the puzzle. That is one incredibly satisfying video.
