New top story from Time: As Homicides Continue, Baltimore Turns to City-Wide Aerial Surveillance

Image
(BALTIMORE) — Starting Friday, the roughly 600,000 people living in Baltimore will be constantly recorded whenever they step out under the open sky. Marvin L. Cheatham Sr., for one, knows he could be watched as he goes to a doctor’s appointment or visits friends. He’ll be spied upon in his back yard, and as he steps into his car, and when he drives around the city, his entire trip will be recorded, too. All his movements will be captured, and he’s OK with this — even though police will have no search warrant, and the overwhelming majority of Baltimore’s citizens will have committed no crimes — because the city is so besieged by violence. “I am so upset and angry about all these people that have died, I’m willing to give up some of my rights, as bad as that sounds, and I’m a staunch civil rights person,” said Cheatham, who led his local NAACP chapter in the 1990s. “I had 19 homicides two years ago in my neighborhood.” Julio Cortez—AP In this April 29, 2020 photo, Marvin...

Parents, this toy is really important

Image
The ' Lammily ' wheelchair hopes to teach kids and parents about inclusivity. The toy has already made a big impact with kids who have played with it.  The wheelchair was designed by Nickolay Lamm, who designed the widely popular 'Lammily' dolls. These dolls depict realistic body types and went viral when released.  The hope is that the wheelchair will see the same success. Lamm has committed to giving 5 percent of the proceeds to charity. Sounds like a win/win.  Read more... Twitter is still full of trolls but says it's getting better at dealing with abuse

Image
It's been more than six months since Twitter decided it should finally start taking its troll problem seriously . The good news: Twitter says its many updates to address abuse and improve its reporting process are working. The service is now "taking action on" 10 times more abusive accounts, compared with this time last year, according to new stats released today. SEE ALSO: Why celebrities leave Twitter The bad news: Twitter is still filled with trolls even as Twitter steps up its efforts to fight them. Many high profile celebrities have left the platform due to abuse (but not, apparently, Ed Sheeran who says he's simply taking a "break" from the service). And despite some fixes, Twitter's existing reporting process often fails its users, according to an exhaustive investigation from BuzzFeed . Read more... Sports fans finally have a streaming TV bundle (but you'd better like soccer)

Image
Crawl, walk, run.  That's how David Gandler has taken FuboTV, in the span of a few years, from streaming tape-delayed German soccer to offering one of the most complete—and sports-heavy—streaming TV packages available. It's particularly impressive considering FuboTV is the only independent service not run by a major media company like YouTube, Hulu, or DirecTV. Or, as one of his angel investors put it, FuboTV is like a kite dancing in the hurricane (yea, it's a James Bond Skyfall quote). "You've got big media companies that have big egos," said Gandler, CEO and one of FuboTV's three cofounders. "In many cases, you have distributors that want to undercut you with every opportunity and have deep pockets, so it just makes for a very complicated business." Read more... I'm giving up on Snapchat because it's way too bloated

Image
Snapchat , buddy, we need to talk. How long have we been best friends now? If I recall correctly, it's been about two years. We've had a lot of good times, and even though I didn’t always understand you, the more we hung out, the more I was able to appreciate you. I knew we passed a major milestone when, after about six months, I bumped Facebook off my home screen just to see more of you. Your Stories were hilarious, and I loved telling my own. SEE ALSO: Snapchat's latest update changes the app in a fundamental way There was a short period when I couldn't wrap my mind around you. I'd delete all my selfies and craggy doodles shortly after posting them — but then I finally started to embrace your ephemerality. Read more...
